Poetry Musings

Tom Absher

This short poem is one of my favorites for it recalls for me the nature epiphany it grew out of. Moments like this are in part what keep me returning to walks in the woods. I'm sure many have had similar experiences of the natural world opening itself to meet our encounter with it. These can be quiet moments which stay with you forever.

    Tree

If you walk in the woods long enough
eventually you come across a tree
standing alone or in a grove
which for some reason
you are given to see.

You have been hiking all day
and now a small Norway spruce
is before you.  Swaying with the wind,
it is beautiful
and perfectly without self.
You take in the tree
for as long as you can.

This need only happen once..
