Thanks, Ernest, for an entertaining and enlightening read.  Dr Beeching has a lot to answer for, but he did not nationalise the railway system -- he cut it to shreds, particularly the feeder lines that made the trunk lines work, but I think you have a typo in your article.  My mother used to tell me of a WWII billboard notice that was apparently common:  If it's yellow, let it mellow; if it's brown, flush it down.  It won't be long before we'll all be forced into that mentality, even the rednecked ostriches that deny the reality and responsibilities of global warming.

Another thing St Andrews is known for among Scottish dancing enthusiasts around the world is the annual 4 week summer school in Scottish Country Dancing.  During this period starting in late July the town centre is awash with men in kilts.
