Malleable Convictions

Ernest Cassara

Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote that “a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.”  Let it not be said that former governor of Massachusetts Willard - oops! Forgot! He hates his name! - “Mitt” Romney, now running for the presidential nomination of the Republican party, is systematically abandoning the positions he took in order to persuade the liberal Bay State that he was not a hobgoblin of the right wing!

Where to begin?  Well, how about guns?  He recently joined the National Rifle Association, and told an audience in New Hampshire that he had pretty much been a hunter all of his life.  Seems that the truth is that he hunted one summer when a teenager - he is now 60! He said, “I have a gun of my own.”  Well, not quite.  His son owns guns.

He claimed that, “I have always been a rodent and rabbit hunter.  Small varmints if you will.  I began when I was 15 or so and I have hunted those kinds of varmints since then.  More than two times.”  Imagine, more than TWO times!

As Gov. of Mass., he supported two gun-control measures that drove the NRA wild, and signed into law restrictions on assault weapons.

As Gov., he said that abortion “should be safe and legal.”  But, he has now seen the light! He is against abortion!

Running for Gov., Willard asked for the endorsement of the Log Cabin Republicans, who promote the rights of homosexuals.  Now - you guessed it! - he opposes gay marriage.

Well, folks!  I’ll leave it to you whether such a man can be trusted.

Oh!, and, by the way, the pundits are mighty impressed by the fact that he has raised a lot of campaign money.  Looking more closely, they discover that the preponderance of the dough came from Mormon country, Utah!
