Romney’s Malleable Convictions

Ernest Cassara

It was at the inauguration of Bill Clinton that many Americans learned for the first time that his name is William Jefferson Clinton.  What is it about Americans that we tend to use diminutives, nicknames, or whatever, rather than a person’s actual name?  It would be at the inauguration of “Mitt” Romney that Americans would learn for the first time that his given name is Willard.  Yes, Willard.  A name he avoids like the plague.

Before I learned the truth, I thought it strange that his highly respected father, George, whom I thought well of when he served as governor of Michigan, and, of course, his wife, would have named a kid “Mitt.”

Be that as it may, Willard served as governor of Massachusetts, presenting himself, as one would expect in the dear old Bay State as a person of liberal convictions.  But, as the old saying goes, on the way to the Forum - in this case, the hoped for Republican nomination - a strange transformation has occurred.

Let us summarize:

  • As Governor: Pro-Abortion
  • As Presidential Candidate: Anti-Abortion

  • As Governor: Pro-Immigration
  • As Presidential Candidate: Anti-Immigration

  • As Governor: Pro-Gun control
  • As Presidential Candidate: Anti-Gun Control

  • As Governor: Pro-Gay Rights
  • As Presidential Candidate: Anti-Gay Rights

Now, I’m using shorthand in this list, but, you get the point.

Now, my question!  Can we trust a man who flip flops so?

In conclusion, a more happy note.  This being the week of our annual independence celebration, Ye Olde Observer wishes you all a happy 4th!
