Lady Bird Johnson Dies At 94

The death of the wife of President Lyndon B. Johnson last week brought to mind the rally that the Massachusetts Democratic Party held in Symphony Hall in Boston, with LBJ and Lady Bird as special guests.  I don’t recall what the dispute was about, but, some malcontents booed a Massachusetts pol when he spoke.  LBJ, on the stage, just lowered his eyes, presumably so he could not be drawn into the fight.

After the event, my wife and I were standing on the sidewalk in front of Symphony Hall, when LBJ and Lady Bird passed by us and climbed into the car waiting for them.  There must have been Secret Service agents protecting them, but, one would never know it.  LBJ did not like them to come between him and the voters.

“The New AT&T”

My cellphone service is provided by Cingular.  Now, it is advertising itself as “The New AT&T.”  Question?  Did Cingular absorb AT&T, or was it the other way around?

Some of us remember the days of monopoly, when all telephone service was provided nationally by AT&T.  Then, some judge or other, declared it a monopoly, and that it must be broken up.  So, now we have Verizon - who could guess from the name that that is a phone company? - and a bunch of others across the country.

There are times when monopolies are good for us!

My Cingular Cellphone

I was mumbling to my Better Half the other day that we use our cellphone for all kinds of calls, including long distance.  Why not, I suggested, give up the land line. She responded, quite sensibly, that we “ring people in” when they visit us in our condo, and that, were we to give up the land line, I could not plague folks with this weekly commentary!

Hmm!
