A Lexicon for the 21st Century

John Turner

Charter Schools: Whip conservatives use to lash the National Education Association.

Chasm: An emptiness said to be caused by someone's death or retirement. A false supposition. Those remaining will always return to fullness.

Chaste: Sterile with a positive spin.

Chastity: An absence of action hated by God, that is, if God has anything to do with nature.

Chatterbox: A man in a pub trying to proclaim his sensitivity to a woman.

Chauvinism: Love of country as viewed by one who hates the country being loved.

Cheese: Substance counterfeited and then worn as hats by crazed football fans.

Cheeta: A monkey who ran around with Tarzan and, along with millions of others, ogled Maureen O'Sullivan.

Chevalier: A knight who contends only in the lists of love, preferring his most tender assignations just before dawn.

Chicanery: Books written to glorify God.

Child: Neurasthenic entity buried deep within each adult who can't seem to get a life.

Chip off the Old Block: A metaphor which is often discouragingly literal.
