Opus and Me

Ernest Cassara

I heard Hillary Clinton use the expression “A Willing Suspension of Disbelief” in one of the Democratic debates.  Don’t recall in relation to what, because my mind immediately wandered off to what I would be writing in this commentary.  “Opus,” the penguin, is featured on the front page of the comic section in the Sunday Boston Globe, immediately following “Dilbert.”  Thus, I gather that the editors consider that this cartoon - about a penguin, after all - speaks to the human condition.  Well, the issue of Sunday, 16 September, spoke to me.  And, I imagine it was based on an experience of the cartoonist, Berkeley Breathed.

Our favorite penguin is at the airport, crunched up in a line labeled “E-Z Check-in.”  Finally gets to the electronic ticketing machine and receives the message, “We have no record of your reservation, your itinerary, your existence or whether your mother even wanted you.”

When Opus finally arrives at “E-Z Security,” he is upended and shaken by a huge security guard, who cries out “NO MORE THAN 3 OZ. OF BODILY FLUIDS, PAL!”

Well, that is not exactly the way they treated me when we were on our way to Tunisia - the trip I told you about a few weeks back - but I was told that my plastic container of sun block lotion was “too big.”  I had to discard it.  (I hope the presumptuous airport person enjoyed having it!)  This, when I was on the way to the hottest country, with the brightest sun I have ever experienced!

The airlines never informed us of the correct size.  But, thumbing through a mail order catalogue, I saw a picture of a set of small plastic containers, apparently designed to fill the bill.

As far as size is concerned, don’t you think fellow passengers would notice if a fella were mixing various containers?

Oh, one other thing.  When we go west on a visit to Ohio soon, we’re traveling by AMTRAK!
