Notes on the Presidential Campaign

Ernest Cassara

One of the more delightful aspects, should John McCain become the Republican nominee - which, at this writing, appears certain - will be that he will drive the right-wing nutcases up the wall.

When asked by David Letterman about Rush Limbaugh’s criticisms of him, John McCain responded, “I don’t listen to him.  There’s a certain trace of masochism in my family, but not that deep.”

How delightful!  Internecine war in the Grand Old Party!  We liberals, no matter who our nominee may turn out to be, can enjoy the spectacle of Limbaugh et al. eating crow.  What other choice will they have?  They certainly will not support Clinton or Obama.

As I say, it is almost certain that McCain has the nomination sewn up, although Mike Huckabee, probably because he is having fun, and has nothing else to do, has not conceded.

I, personally, enjoy listening to the former Baptist minister, but, I think his tax plan is a lot of baloney.  Doing away with the income and payroll taxes and instituting a 17 percent sales tax is something that GOP fat cats should love.  Seventeen percent will mean nothing to them, but it sure as hell will mean a great deal to the common folk.

Then there is the claptrap that Huckabee spouts about doing away with the Internal Revenue Service.  Oh?  Who, pray tell, is going to collect that 17 percent?  If anything, the IRS will have to expand its work force.  Who else is going to examine the books of every business to make sure they are coughing up what is coming to Uncle Sam.

Lest I be misunderstood, this is not an endorsement of John McCain.  One would think that a former prisoner of war would especially not be so bellicose.  But, were he elected, I'm afraid that the U.S., which has strayed from its democratic republican roots to imperialism, would become more hated around the world than it already has because of the bull headed policies of G. W. Bush.
