A Lexicon for the 21st Century

John Turner

Gas bag: Someone who goes on TV on Sunday mornings to tell Americans what they think, a type which has been noted frequently by Calvin Trilling; but you don't need to hear it from him to know it.

Gastronome: A person desperate to be snobbish about something.

Geek: Person for whom chickens should keep on the lookout.

Geography: A subject so little attended in schools that many students cannot name the ocean alongside Atlantic City.

Georgia: State in which supporters of the two main universities detest one another with a vehemence inexplicable to outsiders.

Gender: A made-up category of existence which, lately, has been discovered to be evil.

Gender Feminism: The bad kind, which consists mainly of hissing, as contrasted to deep feminism and its ethic of care which want to turn toward the rule of cooperation and fulsome gossip.

Genealogy: Principal subject being pursued by strangely dressed persons in libraries.

General: A man who has puffed himself up by spending a career groveling to other men.

Genius: A weird person who, somehow, never will get on the team, probably because of subjection to irresistible impulse.

Gentility: A romantic dream which, nonetheless, has its charms.

Gentleman: A descriptive term which once meant something but is now used only by left-wingers to express derision.

Gentrification: Temporary mixing of rich people with poor people; can last, at most, eighteen months.
